Hi everyone,
I have a 1999 50 hp johnson runs good, bit the lower unit seals are leaking, and the mechanic said he is afraid if he takes takes out seals he might not be able to get it resealed correctly and make it worse. His advice is to just changed oil frequently. I have the chance to get a 2001 lower unit, are the 2 lower units interchangeable? Thank you for any input

Most any real mechanic can install a seal kit without any issues !!----Changing the oil frequently is very bad advice in my opinion !!------Those lower units are not robust.------If your 99 model is a 2 cylinder and the 2001 model is a 2 cylinder the lower units are the same.-----If price is right get it for a spare !!-----Model; # of the 2 motors should be posted here.

Thank you for reply, the mechanic is one of the better know mechanics in the area, I was surprised when he told me he couldn't get old seal off,

Installing a seal kit is a simple job on these.-----If it is a salt water motor it might be more work.

I took it to their shop, and left it over night, I didn't think it should have been out of the normal job, they are one of the more reputable shops around specifically for johnsons
