I recently bought a water pump kit to replace my water pump this spring and was getting all the materials required in the manual that the kit comes with. The manual keeps mentioning to oil certain things like the shift rod bushing and the inside of impeller cup for example. But it doesn't mention what kind of oil to use. Do I just use the same lower unit oil I fill the gear case with? Any ideas?

different approaches for water pumps. Water itself is a lubricant, and arguably the cup and impeller is self-lubricating. If using grease, I have some OMC marine grease that I've used for rod bushings and sometimes when installing impellers. If used, recommend just a light film on fingertips. A dab of marine grade lower unit oil would work fine, IMO -- or nothing as all. Your call.

[ed. If you work like I do, it's probably enough to just run fingers over shafts, impellers, ends of water tubes -- or the shop rag I've been using, and wiping hands with. I don't work with latex gloves.]:)
