Ok, so I believe I need a new fuel pump for the Burb.

My mechanic (great guy by the way) would charge me in the $550 range to put one in.

If I can swing this myself it looks like I could spend less than half that.

Question is, can I swing it?

Am I understanding that I need to completely take the fuel tank out to get at it?

I'm pretty much a rookie at this kinda stuff. I've swapped out starters and such.

So, is this fuel pump a complex deal? Or, should I just bite the bullet and have the pro make it happen?

If you can do a starter, you can do a fuel pump. I assume it's in the tank?

First off, get a Haynes or Chilton for the truck, it'll save you a lot of quessing. The less fuel in the tank the better, 'cause that bugger 'll be heavy. A good jack is a must. The tank strap bolts may be hard to access, hope you are flexible....

Once you drop the tank, the rest is easy. There'll be a locking ring on the pump, use brass or non-sparking chisel to knock it loose.

Get the book, get a buddy, and you should be able to do it in just a few hours.

Just a thought, some people will cut an access hole in the bed rather than drop the tank. To each their own....

Yep, it's in the tank. All you need is brute strength and awkwardness to get it down. Be prepared for the tank strap bolts to be rusted and junk. Maybe even the straps. But once the tank is down, it ain't rocket surgery. As said above, get a Haynes (that's what Autozone sells) or Chiltons, it'll make it much easy to understand.

you can do it yourself. really simple. on the suburbans you remove the driveshaft to gain access to maneuver tank. I have squeezed by it with out removing it. get as much fuel out as possible. install the jack in the middle and get a buddy or two to help guide the tank down when the fuel sloshes it is hard to handle. unscrew you filler hose and vent hose, drop straps and lower tank. lower just enough to gain access to top of tank to disconnect electrical and fuel lines.
once all the way out you will take a hammer and punch and tap the large retainer around to loosen pump. Your new pump will come with new electrical wiring from vehicle harness that you will have to redo very easy. and install in revers order.

Brute strength and awkwardness you say? Yah, I got both of those! Lil short on intelligence though, hope that doesn't screw me up.

Bummer is I still have about 3/4 tank (45 gal tank). I wonder if this fill hose has that anti siphon deal in there??

Thanks for the advise fellas!

It shouldn't have an anti-siphon device. Just bends in the filler hose that make it hard to get a tube down there. But I used to siphon gas from my 97 and 90 Chevy vans, and they were fuel injected with pumps in the tank.
