1999 35hp johnson shift shaft

was attempting to put a water pump impeller in my johnson model j35pl3eem with forward controls. when seperating shifter nut behind water inlet did not no it was stuck and wouldn seperate. so i unscrewed it from up inside the midsection[way up] what needs to be removed to thread the upper part of the shaft back it? i no the engine covers will have to be removed, but what else???

Sorry but all you have done here is made yourself a whole lot of extra work.----------------The upper shift rod needs to be at an exact distance on re-asembly.----You may have to remove the powerhead to get this all sorted out.-------The split black plastic keeper on the bottom of the upper shift rod needs to be removed and that would have made it a simple job.

had a feeling that would be the case. oh i felt like a fool when i discovered the black plastic clip after i took it off!!!. thanks for the reply.
