I just finished rebuilding the carb and summerizing my "new-to-me" boat. Everything is running great but it seems to have a flat spot when pulling a skier or wakeboarder right smack in the middle of getting going. More specifically, the boat pulls the skier UP instantly, but after a few seconds of being up and at the point where the boat is trying to get on plane, it seems to take forever to finally get up to speed. The RPM's at this point are right at about 3,000 despite being at full throttle. This happened most recently with a 1/4 tank of gas, 1 adult in the bow area and not to much gear weight on board at all. The boat weighs about 2900 lbs. Its a volvo sx drive too.
According to the manual, the rpm range at WOT for my engine is 4400 to 4800. In a recent test, I was at about 4200 rpm and although I felt it was still climbing just a bit, I wasn't really all that comfortable continuing to run my 13 year old engine at WOT just to see if I could squeeze out another 200 rpm- I think I was close enough especially considering the prop is an original equipment 19p SS.
So, I was considering dropping to a 17p to get more rpms out of the engine out of the hole, but before I did that I want to be sure that that will actually address my problem- like I said, my boat pulls the skier out of the water instantly, but its just a little slow after that point getting on plane.
Could it be a carb issue instead? It runs smooth, idle screws have been adjusted to get optimal vac...maybe I need to adjust the accelerator pump for a later or longer shot?
thanks!
