I just replaced exhaust manifolds and risers with Volvo Penta OEM risers and Barr manifolds.
Damn those manifolds are heavy! I had four of them to do. I used a razor blade scraper followed by lacquer thinner to remove the paint from the gasket surfaces on the new manifolds. I got them in place with dry gaskets except on a couple of spots where I used copper coat due to a bit of rust on the head that had to be cleaned up. Torqued manifolds from center bolts outward to 11 ft/lb on the first pass, then 25 ft/lb on the second pass.
The risers came with thin stainless steel gaskets with a black coating of some sort. The manifolds came with thicker rubbery gaskets. I chose to use the Volvo gaskets with some copper coat on both mating surfaces. Torqued risers to 18 ft. lb.
I'm taking a break to cool off for a minute, then going out to fire them both up and check for leaks, get to operating temp and the re-torque after it cools down.
I think the manifolds and risers were originals, and I'm pushing 600 hours in brackish water on the Potomac River. From the looks of the old hardware, I'm sure glad I decided to change these out this year!
