1999 Evinrude 115 HP FICHS, Starter cutting out...

I have a 1999 Evinrude 115 HP FICHS that the starter cuts out... It will engage and start turning the motor over , but then quits after a few seconds and not long enough for the engine to start. Any ideas?

If it sounds like the starter drive (Bendix) slips or "kicks out" too soon, then it may be time for a new one. It has been improved for heavier duty use and got rid of the troublesome rubber clutch inside it. You also get a new flywheel cover with the drive that is beefed up also.

i had the same problem with mine, I have twin 115's and one would do what you describe, i swapped it for the other motor and the problem moved to the other motor, so I just assumed it to be dodgey in some way, but, later I had a battery problem and had to swap batteries and the problem moved back to the same motor, I got a new battery and both starters are like new again, not too sure what the problem is except somehow the battery had lacked some "crancking" power somehow, although it would turn over the motor no problems, just the "kicking out" thing.
