Why is it that at start up lately, all of the needles in the instrument panel go to the max before returning to their normal positions?

Is this a sign that a specific service needs to be done?

Re: 1999 F150 V6 Question

I have seen pontiacs do that but not any ford truck.... sounds like something is shot or is going. I would suspect it is in the electronics in the dash panel.

go here and ask the question
http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/index.php

bob

Re: 1999 F150 V6 Question

The culprit appears to be the battery, its 6 years old and its fully charged, but seems to be a little sluggish at start-up.
I'll go ahead and install a new one.
Thanks fellers :)

Re: 1999 F150 V6 Question

Some guages do this by design as a self test at startup.

You're sure it just started and didn't always do it right?

Re: 1999 F150 V6 Question

This is not normal for Fords as far as I know. Some Fords guages will often stop where there were when the key is turned off, or go to the middle position. Battery should take care of it.

Re: 1999 F150 V6 Question

I just had lunch with a Ford Tech. He said that thats part of the electrical power system check. Says that you probably just noticed it, happens all the time. Its perfectly normal.

That's good info to know Lubedude. None of my Fords do that, but I don't own anything near that new.

Re: 1999 F150 V6 Question

If I left the doors open and hood up for more than an hour the guages do what your describing. Clean the battery connections and then if remains replace battery.

It is normal my brothers Expedition did that too.

Now I have a Chevy.

I get better Milage pulling my boat than I did running empty in the Ford.

Well It was an F-150 Supercrew with the 5.4 and the Chevy has 5 cylinders. Colorado Crew cab. works very well. I actually like it better than the Ford.

Re: 1999 F150 V6 Question

My 1991 F150 didn't do it, my 1995 Windstar doesn't do it, and my 2004 F350 doesn't do it either. But then, I never had the battery get that low as to where it did that but still started.

AK Chappy

Re: 1999 F150 V6 Question

My ex-work truck was a late 90s F150 with the 4.2 V6, it never did that. What it did do was sometimes just stall for no reason. You could not restart it unless you turned the ignition all the way off, and then tried, it would restart immediatly. These late 90s Fords have wierd electrical quirks that show up and then go away.

your truck is resetting its computer because the battery is getting weak,, over time while sitting not running ,perfectly normal just replace battery soon or you ll be sittin on side of road
