I recently purchased a 99 force and when i got it home and started it i realized that just behind the thermostat there was a bronze L fitted on that has water coming out of it when i start the engine. The motor has the regular tell-tale hooked up and it functions fine. Im just curious what this is for i know a little about outboards but have never seen this. I posted a pic and the piece im talking about is right on top behind the thermostat. Thanks for any help.

Im not sure if that is a factory port or not. I know on some of the older mercs like mine, some folks put a port in the top of the block because it gives a better indication of whether or not you have water circulating in the top of the block and to keep any steam pockets from preventing water from getting to the top. That's just what I have read. I'm sure someone on here with more experience can tell us if that port is factory or not.

I assume it's supposed to be hooked up to a water pressure gauge so you can monitor the flow from the helm. Low PSI = not enough water = overheating.

Most likely not factory. Probably like sludgeguy says. Hook up for water pressure gauge.

Thats where every Force owner that has no factory tell tale, installs one, or uses a pressure gauge. It came with a stainless slotted screw to plug the hole. You must remove the current L fitting before you run it, or you will douse your CDI's, coils, etc.

+1+1+1+1

Its a hookup for helm pressure gauge.

Remove it and put a threaded plug

Cap it off and clamp cap

Add a gauge.

I would add a gauge, make it convienent. Or at least cap it off so you can easily add a gauge later if wanted.

Yes a factory threaded hole, came with a plug in it.
Older models had a metal plug. Newer models had a plastic/nylon plug.
Someone added the fitting to attach a water pressure gauge tube.

You could attach a tube and direct it at unruly passengers.

Thank You guys. Me and my buddy have been trying to figure it out. We just bought the Motor and wasn't exactly sure what it was since water was coming out of the tell tale. Appreciate the info.
