Hello,

I am trying to troubleshoot the kill wire on my 99 Johnson 115. From what I have read it is the black/yellow wire in the port connector on the powerpack. CDI documents say it should never read over 2 volts with the key on or off. Another source says that it should not read any voltage whether the key is on or off. What is correct here?

I am also trying to troubleshoot a sudden stall during idle on this motor. The engine will sometimes just shut off as if you turned it off with the key. Is it possible the kill wire is shorting out somewhere and causing this?

Thank You

You should never have any voltage riding the black with yellow stripe wire coming to the powerpack from any source outside the powerpack.

The emergency kill switch uses the same circuit and a loose clip can cause erratic behavior.

Thank you for the response. I have 0.00 volts with the key off but I do have 0.01 to 0.02 volts with the key in the on position. Does this indicate a problem?

Does the voltage originate at the powerpack or the key?

For your purposes, 0 volts is functionally equivalent to 0.01 volts. Seriously...there will not be any effect with a one to two hundredth of a volt measured on that wire. Look for the problem to be a defective key switch.
