looking at a 1999 johny. Having not had any modern day outboards(I like them old) I'm not familier with new tech. What do I need to know about these motors? what kind of tech are they incorporating in '99? I havn't even looked at the motor yet. I'm assuming these are still carbed motors. OR are they efi? this may be a hard question to get anwsered not knowing the model. any known issues with this motor? Is this still an omc motor or a bomb motor? Any help would be great.

thank you
chad

Carbed (you can tell very easily by taking the cover off ... if it has carbs, you have your answer. OMC/BRP never made any EFI motors. Ignition is either computer or CD, depending on model, and in your case it's CD. 99 was NOT a good year ... it was right around then that OMC began to belly up, QC was almost non-existent for a year or two until BRP acquired the remains of OMC and stringently QC'd tons of stuff that OMC had in inventory. However, if what you're looking at is running and everything works, it's likely OK. The DI motors from around that time (also known as Ficht) are good to avoid, even though all sizes weren't bad, the general reputation in the marketplace is terrible.
