1999 Johnson 150 - Smoking, bogging, poor idle - I did something wrong?

I have a
1999 Johnson 150, carburated with VRO pump hooked up.

Until I did the last PM it ran perfect. Here are the symptoms.
After the PM I ran it for about 2 hour with no problem. Then was idling along and it stalled.
Couldn't start without excessive "choke".
Then ran decent at high speed then bogged and stalled. Could only get it to run by holding in the key but with lots of smoke and stalling.
Primer bulb does not stay firm.
No visible fuel leaks.
When it was running after the PM, it consumed A LOT of oil. About 1 gal for 1- to 15 gallons of gas...about 4 times too much. Before this issue it consumed the normal amount of oil.

This all happened after I did a pm. changed plugs, lower unit oil, cleaned fuel screen.

Symptoms point to air leak. I have changed the fuel screen and the gasket and o ring. This didn't help. I bought new bulb and installed today. will run it tonight. But the new one pumps up to firm...then gets a little soft after 30 minutes or so. 1/2 of a squeeze gets it firm again. shouldn't it stay hard for a while?

If the bulb doesn't fix it, what else could this be? Anti-siphon? Crud in tank? Thanks.

Welcome aboard
Clogged tank vent, water separator/filter, or air leak at any point before pump you can add to the list. Check the o-ring around the fuel screen that you cleaned (plasic conicle shaped device with screens on stb'd side of pump). If not reassembled carefully, common point to suck air.
Good luck

if the suction side of the pump leaks air anywhere the oil side goes nuts. I would start hunting for air leaks in the suction side of the fuel system.

The primer bulb will not stay firm once the engine starts. It gets firm initially because you pump the float bowls full of fuel and the float shuts off the supply. Once the engine starts, that bulb will only remain about half full.

Thanks! I may have found the culprit. Cross your fingers. You all got me thinking about what I did in the PM. This morning, as I was browsing the Clymer manual, I saw a diagram of the fuel screen/filter. I believe I put the gasket in the wrong location. The o-ring was fine, but I put the gasket between the fuel screen and the motor instead of between the screen and the plastic lock nut. I also forgot to lube the o-ring first. will run it tonight and see what happens.

ran better, but still consumes way too much oil and will not idle. i can only run it at fairly high speed. smokes and stalls when idling.

Check your fuel line to make sure that the VRO diaphragm did not rupture, oil will be crossing into the gas and gas will go into the oil line and tank. I just finished a 2000 model 115 that this happened to , the oil tank was way bad diluted with gasoline and smelled like ammonia for some reason. Replaced the VRO and all was well.

I noticed that when I pulled the fuel screen/filter off the motor this last time, that there was oil in the gas that came out of filter. hmmmm...i would think that should be raw gas at that point. rabbitdawghunter you may be on to something.

vapor sepreator cover leakage will cause this symptom as well

could be a bad vro pump, they will act very strange sometimes.

Carb bowls may be still full of oil, drain them, see how it goes, it might take a while to get rid of it.
