Hey guys I purchased my boat earlier this year and have put many successful trips on it. The 175 has always been a Smokey one and not crazy about the low RPM idle. Would never die or fail to start. Last week I was out with a buddy and she ran great all day. I went to start her up to make our 12mile drive back to the harbor and the when I would put in gear and give it gas it would die. I was about to call for a tow then I tried pushing in my choke on the key it sounded fine got it up onto plane at 3k rpm and it ran fine the whole way home? Once I got to the harbor and began to idol for a bit it was smoking like no tomorrow…I changed the plugs the cylinders were oily as all hell she’s running rich. Changed every fuel filter and rectifier and it is still acting up. What direction should I go to next? I just thought it was odd that all of the sudden it would not run right?

Are you using the oil injection system? If so, an air leak in the gasoline fuel line will cause lots of oil to be injected.

Check the main strainer(you changed the fuel filter, right) under the airbox and its oring and rubber seal. My guess is that you did not replace the seals correctly.

Check your fuel pressure at idle.
I suspect you find your fuel pump is on the way out.
Leaking or torn diaphragm
