About to buy a 1984 Mako with a 1999 Johnson 200 HP V6 and was warned against buying if it was a FICHT engine. How do I tell if it is a FICHT or not?

Go to the Outboard Repairs Section and look for FICHT.

Re: 1999 Johnson 200 HP V6

Hi Elwood..

The FICHT engines were the first direct fuel injected outboards manufactured by the now defunct OMC Corp. Wanting to make a big splash, the OMC Corp. forgot about quality control and threw these engines out on the market. There wer lots of problems with these engines. There were several mods and enhancements to them but the damage was done. OMC is now Bombardier. If you decide on the engine, ask if the upgrades have been added...ie...new heads and injectors.
I know of a lot of the engines are still out there. Some are still running and some are junk. It's 50/50 on these engines. My opinion, and I'm a mech for Bomby....think twice about the purchance unless you get a good solid warranty.
