First off let me start this thread with I do have the factory timing procedure and Seloc manual for my 50hp Johnson. I hate the Seloc manual by the way. I have bought this motor new and up until this year has been great. My problem is that I cannot set the base timing.
I cannot set the timing at 4 degrees without the timing base being all the way advanced. I set everything exactly as specified in the factory timing procedure and it will not start unless I advance the ring. This all started when I replaced the detent on the throttle and timing advance lever. This seems to be a cut and dry procedure but I cannot get the timing in spec. I stated the motor has been great, however when it was 2 yrs old and under extended warr. I had it rebuilt because of a tapping sound. The shop that performed the work was a professional shop and still are in business. I have had no problems with this motor until now. My question is, could the power pack be the problem. Could the shop that performed the work have used a timing ring or other parts that are not original? I use this boat every day and it runs good as long as you don't try to plane out. It is flat because of the timing issue. Help I am repowering next year with a 75 etec and I don't want to take this to the shop and spend 5 or 6 hundred to adjust linkage. You can email me at d55olds1@yahoo.com with some answers. Thanks, Dave.
