1999 merc stalling

I have a 1999 mercury 2 stroke outboard and it stalls after 3 or 4 min. of use, I choke it and get it started and it will do the same thing again and again. But, it will run with the choke half way out. What is confusing is that I pulled the plugs and the bottom plug is wet with gas after running the engine, top plug is dry. There is no gas anywhere to make me think that it is flooding. I just don't get it! I have to pull the choke half way out to get it started after it stalls and one plug seems not to be firing. Has anyone ever heard of a problem such as this?

I checked that thread. It doesn't explain my problem as to why after running the motor I check the plugs and one is dry and one is wet with gas. every year i add stabil and an additive that prevents moister build up in the tank caused by ethanol, but, just in case, I will check all of that next week when I'm up north where the boat is. thanks

Barber, You probably have a weak/bad fuel pump or dirty carbs. Have someone pump the primer buld as you are operating the boat. if this fixes it, rebuild your fuel pump. If that doesn't fix it, you likely have gummed up carbs.

Will do that when I get up north next week and let everyone know if it gets fixed and how. Thanks!

Re: 1999 merc stalling

I finally got up north to my pontoon and went through everything on the motor to do with gas. Found nothing wrong, strong spark, cleaned the carb, checked the fuel pump, filters, etc... drained the gas in the tank and lines, rinsed the tank with dry gas, filled it w/new gas and started the engine, let it run for 7 or 8 minutes, throttled it high and low and it ran perfect. Put it in the water and had no problems. I must have gotten some bad gas with the last fill that may have had water in it. So, I installed a Yamaha water filter between the tank and the bulb and hopefully that will take care of any future problems with water.

thanks for all of the replies.
