1999 Mercruiser 3.0 stalls on acceleration

Just purchased a '99, 19' Bayliner with a Mercruiser 3.0 (100 hours). The previous owner said it's "cold blooded" for the first 20+ minutes and gave me a few tips on how to warm it up (blower on 4 minutes, pump throttle 3 times, run at trolling speed and gradually work up to full throttle). I took it out for the first time a week ago and it started fine and idles great, but took a good 15-20 minutes of slow/medium paced trolling before I was able to open the throttle wide open without problems - just as the previous owner said.

Yesterday I had it out for the second time and trolled around for a good 20 minutes and did the same prep to get the engine "warmed up," but it died whenever I tried to give it more than 1/4 throttle. It would start back up no problem, idled fine without killing but was kind of rough/shaking at times when I trolled.

So my questions: Does it need to be warmed up for 20-30 minutes? Is this typical for a Mercuiser? Is there a bigger underlying issue that I need to have serviced? Should I be looking at my gauges for a desired temp reading?
The only maintenance info I have is that it never had problems, was cold blooded at first, has a fresh full tank of gas and the oil was changed last year.

Any input much appreciated!

It sure sounds like the choke is not working. That would be the first thing to look at. Secondly, even with a non-functioning choke, it should warm up quicker than 20-30 minutes while underway. Watch your temp gauge, and see if you are getting to the 140-150 range. My guess is that it is not. That would indicate a stuck open or missing thermostat. Since this is the beginning of the season, and this boat is new to you I would also suggest that you replace the fuel/water seperating filter. Non-related to your problem, but I would also check the drive lube for the propper level and make sure there is no moisture in the drive.

IT should only need to warm up for a couple of minutes.
Do a complete tuneup, make sure the timing is right on the money and the advance is working.
Also make sure the accelerator pump in the carb is working and the idle mixture is set properly.

Thanks for the input. I'm going to have it tuned up - not sure what that will cost. I would take care of it myself, but my mechanical skiils are around the "hack" level.

Alright, finally the marina got to it today and after giving it a tune up (replacing filters, timing, etc...) he had it in the water and said it's still not running good. After taking it back to the shop, he he could feel the carburator "sucking air." They are still investigating it and will call me later. I wonder what this is going to cost!
Sheesh - just bought this boat and now I'm stuck with a tune up at $375 (but it was due for one) -now the carburator appears to be hosed? Glad we got the previous owner to shave a grand off his original price. Oh well, the life of a boat owner!

this sounds very familiar to whats going on with mine except the temp warms up and it doesn't take 20 mins... but the shaking in gear and the sucking air sound are right on...hmm...keep me posted as to what they come up with

Quick update - the problem has been fixed. I couldn't get the exact details since the marina owner gives you about 10 seconds of phone time - but they took the carb apart and some part (gasket?) was on backwards. HUH? How the hell could that happen? I wonder if the ex-husband of the gal who sold it to me did a little sabotage before she got custody of it.

had similar issue on 3.0. there is a rebuild kit with some new gaskets etc, I basically found a jet partially clogged, whitch caused a lean condition during the transition to wide open throttle. it was something that happened over time and i kept trying to get more from the accelerator pump. it's been years ago and I remember the material causing the problem wasn't affected by solvents and I had to use small picks and compressed air.

it made a huge difference and we didn't realize the slow loss of performance. can't remember much more, but your situation sounds very similar.
