Want to change the impeller on the water pump and can't find how to disconnect the shift lift linkage to get the lower unit off. Mr. google was no help, nor was the IPL from a couple of websites. IPL lists show a lower linkage section with couplers, but doesn't show to use a screw driver or large hammer.

Fairly simple ---Remove the black plastic water intake screens.---Undo the coupling nuts.----Remove paint from upper shift rod.----Slide the upper nut up.----Remove that black , tapered , split keeper.---Lower unit will now come off.

Worked great, thanks. Except for the little bitty nylon keeper on the shift rod. It naturally shot across the shop floor. After looking for an hour or so I gave up and went to order a pump kit and a new keeper. $8+$4 shipping for the little thing smaller than a pencil eraser. Went back to shop to back tractor out of shop to cut some brush. Noticed a $12 little black dot where the tire lugs had been (10' away from the boat motor). Reminded me of the Far Side cartoon where something sprung out when the patient was opened up on the operating table Anyway, does the paint that had to scraped off serve and purpose (corrosion) and need to be repainted, or was it just sprayed with the rest of the motor before the screens were put on?
