1999 130hp Yamaha 2-stroke

Started the engine today while fishing. I noticed an excessive amount of smoke coming from the exhaust at idle. Normally, it smokes minimally, like all 2-strokes do. I shut down and restarted. Same thing.

I then noticed oil running out from under the hood. Popped the hood. Engine mounted oil tank is overflowing. Got towed in.

It seems to me that the remote oil tank pump may be stuck on. I checked the float in the engine mounted tank, and it seems OK and moves freely. The 4-pronged plug connected to the engine mounted oil tank float switch was clean and dry.

Could it be that the remote pump is providing enough pressure that it is forcing the oil to be injected into the engine at a higher rate than is needed, resulting in the excessing smoking? Or do I have two seperate issues? It seems that the remote oil tank is now empty, so I will try and run it on the garden hose in the AM to see if the smoking problem is solved now that the remote pump has no more oil to force into the system. The engine mounted tank is still nearly full.

Any ideas?

Re: 1999 Yamaha overflows oil

After searching and reading more on this site about people with similar problems, I went a rechecked a couple things on the engine. The 3 gal. remote tank is still approx 1/2 full.

When lifting the float switch from the engine mounted tank, the float switch now seems to operate properly. Half way up, the pump kicks on. All the way out, and the horn sounds. Reseated properly in the tank, the remote oil pump turns off, as the engine mounted tank is at it's proper level.

I'm wondering if this was a temporary glitch caused by a stuck trim indicator?

I understand now that the oil was being pumped into the air breather, and belching smoke because of it.

It's too late tonight to run the engine on the hose and ears, but I'm thinking (and hoping) that the problem was just a one time glitch.

Anyone's thoughts?

had same problem a year ago.....main tank on the engine kept overflowing intermittantly......the float sensor was good!!........then after a few other checks found i had a coroded charge lead connector....(the one thats near the regulator/rectifier).......when i touched the lead the last wire strand finally broke.......so what was happening was while i was using the boat and starting the engine during the days waterskiing.....the battery was slowly flattening and when it gets below a curtain voltage the computer starts pumping oil non stop!!!! regardless of float level........i put a new connector on the charge lead and good by problem with the oil.....so maybe for you could be a good idea to check the charging circuit to the battery:)

I just had the same problen with both motors after a submersion, I had another motor bottle for the oil and replaced it. The motor bottle stopped at the level it was supposed to before overfilled. I swapped the tops on the oil fill bottles and the problem stopped. The thing that amazed me that the new oil bottle had no plastic housing for the floats, I took out the tube that the floats fit in and it worked fine. The floating switches must have hung up in the tubes.
