My outboard has been working flawlessly for years of daily use. A few weeks ago it started to get hard to start. A few days later, the top cylinder would cut in and out. But most of the time is was just running on the bottom cylinder. Top plug was dark and wet. Bottom plug was tan and dry when I changed them at that time. Didn't help with the cylinder cutting in and out. Then a few days ago I couldn't start the outboard at all. It would occasional sound like it wanted to start but rarely. Even with starter fluid.
I pulled the flywheel. Both coils looked like they were oozing a thick oily substance. Kinda like thick black oily rubber cement. One of the coils had just a little and the other had filled the bottom of the flywheel. Maybe it is a glue or something added at the factory? I changed that one coil. But when I put it back together, and pull the starter cord, the throttle lever gets pulled to "Off" When I move the flywheel, it moves the throttle lever.
