Hey guys - I purchased a 17' center console with a DT140 a few weeks ago. The boat is a 1988, and I believe that the motor is as well.

It has been used sparingly over the last few years, and I was advised it was in good running order - they were wrong, but as I only paid $1500 for the whole setup I am willing to spend some time and effort to make it right.

I have replaced the control box and cables as they were very stiff and one of the cables was damaged. I also repaired the steering cable which was stuck in the outboard. I also replaced the lower unit oil.

bought an impeller kit, but due to some seriously stuck bolts I put that on hold for a few weeks.

Here is the main problem. In neutral, the engine seems smooth, and runs great (revved up to around 5,000 RPM with ease). I launched it this morning here in Tampa Bay, and instantly noticed a problem. The boat would not plane and is seriously down on power. In gear, max RPM was about 2500 RPM, and speed was about 8mph on the GPS. Made the short but slow ride over to where I wanted to fish, and on the way back we experimented by adding a little more weight to the bow. We got it on a plane and speed to about 20mph at 3000 - 3200 RPM or so. As soon as it was down off plane we were back to 8mph at full throttle and 2500 RPM.

What could cause the lack of power?

I know the gas in the tank was old, but I topped it with fresh gas.

Plugs are like new

Checked the linkage, it is getting full throw on the throttle

I have a pretty mechanical background, and don't mind diving into this myself. Any suggestions on what to look for?

Thanks!

I have an 1987 DT 140. There is a reset button under the cover, right above the idle adj. You can try that. Make sure the oil tank is full and it Registered FULL. Low oil will cause a safety shut down on rpms. Don't know if you have the owners manual, that will tell about these safety features that will atomaticaly lower rpms for oil, water pump and over rev. I am Not an expert

I'll check that - thanks!

Do you know if that would hold back the RPM's in neutral as well?

Also - since I did get the RPM's to rise under plane a little bit - it leads me to belive it may be something else....

You need to find out if the engine is running on all 4 cylinders. If its not, it would behave as you describe. That engine will rev fine on 2 cylinders when its in neutral out of the water with no backpressure. All that shows you is that it runs. Pull the spark plugs 1 at a time (ground the loose plug wire) and see which one doesn't make any difference. Thats the bad one. Now you need to find out why, spark-fuel-or compression. Check spark, if that OK squirt premix into the offending cylinder. If thats not it check compression. Good luck.

Based on the fact that its been sitting a lot and that Suzuki ignitions are pretty bullet proof, I'm betting on a dirty carb in need of a rebuild (the squirt test will confirm). It may very well have run OK the last time it was run but that can happen when they sit. Report back on the results so we all know.
