So ive read up a little bit and see some people saying connect the neg to the pos of each battery and the connect the pos and neg to to trolling motor, and others say jump pos to pos and neg to neg. but when i jump pos to pos and neg to neg ionly reach 12.5-12.8 volts at the trolling motor. got me scratching my head wandering if any one can help me out?

Wiring the pos. to the pos. and neg to the neg (parallel)only increases your amperage. To achieve a 24v system you need to wire the one negative and one positive together and use the two remaining terminals as your supply terminals. (series)

I have two red wires and one black coming from the plug up front, the guy that sold me the boat said hook one red to each battery and jump the neg. to the other wire going to the trolling motor. but when i did i didn't get 24 volts and the 82 lb thrust trolling motor was really slow and hardly moved the boat. Now I'm thinking rewire the whole thing to accommodate the way you are explaining it. I appreciate your help and advice. Ive never owned a bass boat and have never used a 24 volt system.

Maybe this will help

For the jumper, I usually run a black wire, and wrap the + end with red tape.

You have a configuration likely intended for a combination 12/24 motor which means it can operate on either 12 or 24 volts. Those motors have a 12/24 swtich on them. Those systems typically had a one red, one orange and one black wire. Here is how that system looks.

If your trolling motor is a 24 volt only then this is the system you need. You can eliminate one of the red wires in the receptacle. Just make sure the red and black wires on the PLUG match with the red and black on the RECEPTACLE.
