2.3 ford omc with cobra outdrive

Hi guys I am new here j ust looking to learn more about boats. I am having trouble with my 1991 2.3 with the cobra outdrive. It will start and idle fine when it warms up. When I put it in gear it spits and sputters and quits after giving it a little throttle. If I slowly bump it up slowly it will eventually take off and run fine after having to restart it 5 times or more. Motor free revs good in neutral. What could be done to try to eliminate this
problem?

Welcome to iboats....


YOU have a problem with the shift plate and switches and/or lower shift cable (binding) causing the ESA to activate when going into gear.


If you do not know what that means, you should get yourself a correct year OEM OMC service manual. Also do a little reading here: http://www.hastings.org/~stuart/cobra/

Otherwise, you'll need to find someone that knows something about dog-clutch Cobras.
