Hello,
I have an 88 2.3 liter Ford with Cobra OMC mounted in a Blue Fin.

Last year, I got the engine very hot - found that the impeller was almost gone. I replaced it and the housing, but still over heated. I took the head off and found pieces of impeller blocking the cooling ports of gasket - removed and reassembled - same problem. Will run fine for hours in drive way with rabbit ears - but when in the lake with load on engine - it doesn't take long to get into the red.
I've taken the thermostat out. The water pump seems fine - and I see no reason to replace it -
I'm considering taking the head off again and having a shop take a look at it.
(In fact I pulled the head tonight and hope to get someone to look at it tomarrow.)

Any other ideas ??? Thanks in advance.

GeoK414---Did you check manifolds and risers for blockage?I recall seeing other posts where they were at least partially responsible for overheating. You will hear from some VERY boat smart people here and they will steer you properly.Welcome to IBoats.

believe it or not, the engine will run hot without a t-stat. also, part of that impeller may be blocking a hose restricting flow. u must make sure u get all of it.

I was in the same boat not to long ago..I have the same setup on a 89 Renken. In your driveway with the muff's on pull each hose off one at a time with the motor running to find out where the blockage is. Start with the intake hose to make sure your getting water up from the outdrive first.. it gives you a starting point. It doesn't take much to restrict the flow of water to cause overheating. If you have good flow on the intake side. I run at adout 120 now without any problems.
