Hi folks: i have been having problems with my 2.3 litre ford with an omc cobra leg in a 1988 bayliner. it has been eating the gears off of the distributor and the stub shaft. the last gear lasted 45 minutes. i have had the stub shaft replaced twice and the distributor gear 3 times.i can no longer afford to pay a marine mechanic to fix it. i pulled the engine out and know i need to figure out whats going wrong.any help or thoughts would be appreciated

thanks

Hi qc 10, in case nobody here has the answer and assuming this engine is also used in Ford cars try this auto help site, maybe try the BatAuto Forums first,
http://www.batauto.com/
good luck, Ken

Re: 2.3 litre ford engine

wow thats a wierd one. All I have is guesses, but here they are.

All I can figure is there is a problem with the cam and distributor gear meshing correctly. The distributor usually has shims between its gear and the housing's bottom, are ther any? Some camshafts have a button on their front to prevent the cam from walking towards the front of the engine. But that would require a tear down. I don't know if a real sloppy timing chain would do that. So cams have special ways of getting oil to the gear, that may be blocked and filled with crud. I don't have too much experience with that Ford motor and it sounds like you'll have to find someone who does, try a machine shop that rebuilds motors.

Hi,
QC10. I to have an 88 Bayliner that just had this same problem. An engine builder I know said this was a common problem with this engine. I was just wondering if you found out why, because I'll be putting mine back together as soon as the parts arrive.
