2.3 VS 3.0 OMC Cobra lower unit

If this subject has already been covered in another post I apologize. I have a 1987 OMC Cobra 3.0 outdrive. My question is can I put an OMC Cobra 2.3 lower unit on my 3.0 upper? What if any difference is there between the lower units? Are the lower units geared the same or differently? Is it just the uppers that are geared differently? Any help on the subject would be greatly appreciated. I cant seem to find the answer anywhere else.

Look at the props or prop shafts are they the same?
The 3.0 used two different lower units over the years.
I think the 2.3 only used one design.
The 3.0 larger unit was based off the V-6 outboard gearcase
If prop shafts are the same They are the same bottom end...hope this helps
