Been working on this engine throughout the winter. It has been fully rebuilt. I started it the first time yesterday and it ran great. I ran it at 1500 RPMS for about 30mins to run in the cam and called it a night.

Today I started it and it still runs great but now anything over 2400 RPMs and it starts running rough. I checked my timing and it was set at 8* and it seems to be getting plenty of fuel. I changed my points and plugs during the rebuild and set everything to spec.

This engine was running great before i done my stringers transom and deck. The first time out it sound different so i pulled it again. I found low compression numbers and #4 with rust on the walls and destroyed valves. It was all original circa 1981 so not bad for the age. Also my cam gear was stripped and chipped in places. I was the fiber type gear.

I had rebuilt the carb prior to the rebuild due to an acceleration problem. It performed well after.

The engine is not in the boat, I made a test stand to run it to make sure all the bugs are out before I install it. So there is no load on the engine while running. Also the ignition is hooked up pretty basic. I have a gauge panel and wired directly to the senders. Ignition is on switched power to the coil with a resistor in line. One more thing i noticed is that my distributor body gets really hot after about 15mins. I don't recall if it used to do that or not.

Anyways i think it's an issue with my timing or ignition just haven't figured it out yet.

Thanks,
Jeff

If there is no problems with the engine, distributer, plugs and wires the only other thing is fuel and carb. I would suggest rechecking the dwell angle on the points and distributer cap, if all good go to the carb.

Thanks I will check it again this weekend.

The way my fuel is hooked up could be a problem too. From the tank to inline filter to the pump is just tight fitted hoses...no clamps. Just for testing purposes. Maybe I'm sacking air at high rpm. Going to put clamps on before the next run.

thanks for your reply

The fuel should go from the tank to the pump, then to the filter to carb. The filter could be causing a slight vacuum at higher RPM
