2.5 L won't stay running at idle when warm

What would be the reason for the subject problem? This is a 1988 engine that is in the boat I am restoring. It idles fine when cold, but won't stay running (900-1000 RPM) after warmup (choke wide open). It restarts fine with a squirt from the accelerator pump, but then only runs for 5 to 10 seconds. Idle bleed adjustment doesn't correct this problem. I am thinking float level is low. Any advice would be appreciated.

A little more info is needed, serial numbers, kind of carb. Sounds like the carb is plugged up,time for a rebuild? Will it keep running if ya"trickle" a bit of fuel in the carb once it starts?

It sounds like this maybe a new to you boat project. I would get the carb cleaned up and rebuilt. The kits are around $20 and it is an easy job. Being a 1988 it is likely a Mercarb but verify. How many mixture screws are on it?

They're real easy to rebuild. Being a 2.5 it's probably a Rochester 2GC or a mercarb which is basically the same. The mercarb only has 1 idle mixture screw and the Rochester has 2. Also the mercarb's throttle base plate and main body may be one piece, usually are.

Should have an aluminum tag on one of the bowl screws with the serial number. Check the float bowl for the serial.number too. compare the 2 to make sure someone didnt make a frankencarb.

And keep track of which check ball come from which hole, my rule is the light weight aluminum ball goes under the accelerator pump.

Good luck
