hey guys i could use your wisdom. Boats been good all summer, coming back in last night stop and fished a bit, upon starting it back up it had a bit of a stumble...immediately when throttling up it backfired through the carb, i had to limp home and it was running rough. One thing it was doing was giving me wacky gauges..and the voltage was dancing around. I remembered a similar issue when i first got it and the belt was loose. Well it was loose again so I tightened it, but realized the belt got buzzed down from slipping. I just went for a run to see if it was better, and it was..for 10 minutes, then the problem got really bad and almost didn't make it in. I could tell the alternator wasnt charging properly, and the bearing was making some growling noises so that is coming out to be rebuilt today.

Can an alternator that's gone bad cause erratic running issues/backfiring? I was thinking maybe the fine rubber dust from the belt got through the flame arrestor and plugged up something in the carb, but a mechanic where i got fuel said he has seen similar problems that were caused just by a bad alternator (voltage ripple messing with ignition?)
