Merc Guru's,

I've recently replaced my '95 Black Max with a '00 225 EFI. The old motor utilized an inline water separator (in the battery compartment) and the new motor (still hooked to the existing fuel system) also has an onboard filter.

Boat is getting splashed Thursday for the first time with the new motor.

I've heard rumors that the motor cannot pull fuel through two filters, and that the inline filter should be bypassed, otherwise fuel starvation may occur. Is this true? Or should I just run as is?

Will be on the water with my wife and 8 week old daughter and really don't want this thing to starve itself and get stuck.

Any input would be appreciated.

Many thanks,
Darren

So, through further research it sounds as though Merc's official take on this is:

Mercury DOES NOT recommend the installation of additional filters.

Additional filters can introduce a fuel supply restriction.

Your engine is already equipped with an adequate level of filtration.

Thus, the inline filter will be removed (replaced with a ball valve for fuel shut off) and the on board filter doing the... filtering. A mechanic friend says he's seen lots set up with dual filters, but again is it worth the risk of a new powerhead?

Hopefully others can benefit from this one.

Darren.
