I need to take head off 76 2.5lomc and put it on 2.5l 1981 mercrusier. What gasket set do I need.i don't really have the time to order a set? And also should I go ahead and put new timing chain also?

As long as the head gasket is not steel, then yes, a car parts shop will be fine. One of the better brands is Felpro. DO a search for "marine head gasket 2.5l"

It's the same gasket, regardless of the year. It's a 2.5l engine, and they all run the same block, so the gasket is the same.

I thought gm 2.5l isn't the same as the one in the boats? I read something about the 3.0 gm gaskets will work.i can't go in and tell them a boat they won't carry that.i thought this motor only came in 67 68 chevelles.maybe head the same.so 81 mercrusier is l4 motor? I just need something to tell them.

The 2.5l boat engine is a GM engine. Tell them you need a 'head gasket for a Mercruiser 120'...

Ok I didn't really want to hit the marine place up.there stuff always double.dont mean to ask, but the 2.5l isn't in any cars so they probly don't carry it.or that's what I was told from previous posts. Is it always a yes to new timing chain since I'm down that far? Or should I just check for slack?

your 2.5 liter was in the Chevy II (Nova) from 1962 to 1970. however those gaskets were steel. so you NEED to buy marine gaskets.

Well I ended up putting harmonic balancer pull on engine.for some reason person took it off and run a short belt from pump to alternater, and pull was gone.i figured they did it so water couldn't get in the oil. Well I've run the motor for 45 mins or more, and oil still black as coal.has gray looking smoke coming out the valve cover when reved up.smoke even came out dipstick when it back fired.running little hot also like at 190.needs new impeller. Do you guys think it could be more serious then head? I've got head off the omc looks alright.im going to have machine shop test it.witch push rods should I use omc or the ones in motor now? Just tring to figure out how smoke get in bottom of motor.
