I buy Yamalube 2 cycle oil with my Yamaha.
I used to use Quicksilver with my Johnson.
Is quicksilver the same, does it come from the same plant. Does Yamaha add anything different or magical.
I just figure for motors that cost roughly 20,000 to replace it makes sense to use the specified oil. Am I crazy for paying more?

You are absolutely on the right track...use what the manufacturer suggests. There's no sanity in testing 2 cycle oils on a 20k motor...just a reconfirmation of what you thought :)

This discussion usually opens a can of worms that boils down to "use what you are comfortable with".

I run a 29 year old Johnson outboard and run nothing but Johnson oil in it. It has never left me stranded yet. I pay a little more, about $4a gallon, but I usually only go through a gallon or two a year.
