i know that they call it marine motor oil for a reason, but is there really a difference in the marine oil vs the 2 cycle oil used in weedeater and chainsaws. mixed to the same ratio. is there a difference in the oils used ot what in it. or made of. And which on do you us?? 2 cycle oil or marine 2 cycle oil.

Use TCW-3. dont test your luck. older oil is for older gas mixes. not todays gas.
You can use lawnmower oil, but why? use boat oil in the lawn mower, I do. Runs great.

tcw3 is for outboards that use additional cooling...... the chainsaw/weedeater oil is designed for air cooled. The resulting ash content is one of the results..... I would use the proper oil in the appropriate motor

i can tell that the boat oil is quite thicker than chainsaw oil; and that one is for air cooled motors and the other not. i just buy big containers of boat oil and use it in everything 2 stroke.

use what's recommended in your application--tcw-3 in marine and regular 2 cycle in weedeater/chainsaw you can't go wrong

Re: 2 cycle oil differences

I would not recommend using TCW-3 in an air cooled engine. One oil is not better than the other...they have differenet applications. Like Bob said the difference is ash content. Air cooled 2 stroke oil has high ash content. Chainsaws, Weedeaters and such can run around 10,000 rpms. They require additional lubrication. That comes in the form of ash. But they get hot enough that burn the ash off and there's no ill effects. Use TWC-3 in a chainsaw and your lacking lubrication. Outboards run around 5K rpms. They don't get hot enough to burn off the ash if you run air cooled oil in them., and the result is a chamber full of carbon and junk that won't burn off.

Re: 2 cycle oil differences

thanks guys for the feed back. I know i should use the marine for marine purposes, but didn't really know the differences. or if any other than title and price. because marine 2 cycle tcw-3 is about $1.50 more than just plain 2cycle. and didn't want a lot of diifernt mixes to have to keep up with. thanks again!

Re: 2 cycle oil differences

My small 2 stroke engines are hardly used, so its easier to just have one kind of oil than having different kinds laying around, i dont chop down forests with my chainsaw, only branches and such. My weedwacker never gets used, i cant string the d*** thing if my life depended on it. i beleive it is a 4 stroke anyway, i kinda forgot about it.

Re: 2 cycle oil differences

rosser,
read my last post. That is the difference in TWC3 and air cooled 2 stroke not just the price or name. I dont have different mixes laying around in similar containers. I mix my boat mix in the boat tanks. If theres a mix in a 1 gallon can it's saw gas. 5 gallon can is straight. If you run the regular 2 cycle oil that is not twc3 rated eventually it will foul the cylinder with carbon because it cannot get hot enough to burn it off. You may runn all season with no effects and think I'm crazy but sooner or later it will catch up to the motor.
