Re: 2 Cycle oil shelf life?

Here in MI, with a max 6 month season I would change the outdrive lube every fall, including the resivoir as it cycles in and out of it. You need to do this minimum to remove any water contamination reguardless. If you run it a lot or have a beefed up motor it will live longer if you do it more often.

My buddy with a 500+ BBC does his every month when in season and swears by Merc lube. Others blow out drives and he does not. My current OBs are stock and I only use them on weekends, so they get just the fall change unless I know they are getting lots of water in them; then the lube will be milky. Then I change it often until it gets fixed.

Michael,

2 stroke oil like Quicksilver will last well over a year in your reservoir tank. I don't know how long it does last in total, but I'm certain that it's much longer than a year. Old gasoline is what you have to watch out for - that would be dicey after sitting for a year.

Michael, the TC-W# oil you're talking about will last longer than you will, as long as it's not contaminated. Forget shelf life ... I'm using oil I bought 15 years ago, and if they made the stuff 50 years ago it would be fine.
