I have an 1985 60HP. I have been using QUICK SILVER 2 cycle oil, I don't know if there's a better oil I should be using, also don't anything about synthetic, should I be using that?

Re: 2 Cycle Oil

Most, if not all 2 cycle oils available today are rated TCW-3......it retrofits all engines, required on newer ones. I have a '94 up Merc service manual and TCW-II was the best available at the time of printing of that manual.

I use Syn and conventional oils and notice with syn's that my engine runs cleaner and smokes less.

Not sure if Merc premium plus oil is syn or not (they don't say) but highly suspect it is Pennzoil premium plus (stated to be syn), just in a black container with a Merc label. Those are the two oils I have settled on and use today and can't seem to tell the difference.

Synthetics and semi-synthetics are generally better lubricants and are better at keeping exhaust smoke down than conventional oils. They cost more, except when you find Pennzoil Semi-syn at WalMart for $7.00/gallon one tends to stock up on it. However, as long as the oil is TCW3 rated you are good to go. I've used them all and have never lost an engine. I do prefer semi-syn however. Farm stores carry TCW3 in the range of $9.00 - $11.00/gallon.

As I understand it Synthetic beside burning cleaner is also biodegradeable.

Amsoil say their synthetic is more water friendly ... they have biodegradeable but decided not to put it on the market due to high price.

Shell has a biodegradeable outboard 2 cycle oil available in New Zealand ... cant find it here.

Donno about others ...

cheers

As long as it is TCW-3 you are good to go. Personal opinion from there on.
I am currently running the "Canadian Tire" own brand in my VRO motor and it smokes no more or no less than any other oil I have used.
