Re: 2 or 4 stroke

No doubt 4 strokes are state of the art.
Clean ,quiet, smooth.
However, and Im in the minority on this.
I feel there are just too many moving parts,
they require more maintenance than a 2 stroke,
Generally weigh more, overall performance tends to be somewhat less than a comparable 2 stroke.
The 4 stroke does get somewhat better mileage.
I would sure try to get a test drive with both motors if possible.

This subject has brought up zillions of opinions on previous posts.

I can follow the idea of many moving parts demanding more service. I'm very happy with my 2-stroke but in case of a new today I'd be very tempted by a 4-stroke. Future law and regulations most likely will get hard on 2-strokes and since the first 4-strokes much has been improved. Less weight, more power and occasionally very good offerings. With ever raising fuel prices the consumption is important too.

Still, the best second hand offers has been on 2-strokes.

Yes, there are a kazillion opinions/arguements on this matter. Many 'facts' change depending on the specific motor too. Case in point:
4 -strokes are heavier. Check out the weights for 50 hps. If memory serves, the Honda ( and I think the Merc) 50 hp are the lighter than the 2 strokes.
Regardless, there is one fact no one can deny or argue: four's are quieter. Since all other aspects are comparable, this single trait alone is enough to warrant having a four-stroke. Would seem that this issues really applies to pontoons as well since one of the big reasons for owning one is to carry plenty of people etc.
