1996, Merc 150 hp, carbs. Less than 200 hrs on engine. I think the jets may have gummed up for this cylinder and caused the piston to burn. Compression readings are: 1-105; 2-25; 3-108; 4-105; 5-106; 6-108. I pulled both heads and the only problem visible is the # 2 piston. The edge of the top of the piston has been hot. The cylinder bore is somewhat scored, no 'gouges' etc, just 'rougher' than the other five. You can still see the hone marks on the cylinder walls of the other 5. Mic-ed the bores, #2 may been 3.126, the other five are 3.125" and round.

Now, after I remove the powerhead, remove the other parts, etc., what is the best way to go from this point? The mechanic at the local boat place wants to do all 6 cylinders while it is down. I say no, it doesn't need it. He's talking $3,000. Says while it is down may as well, save from having to do it later.

Can I take it to a place that does automotive rebuilds and have them hone/bore the cylinder and install the piston?

I'm full of questions on this!

As long as the automotive place knows the tolerances of the piston to the cyl wall, they should be able to help you out.

As for rebuilding the entire engine...its not uncommon for an establishment to want to overhaul the entire motor.

TMD

I shouldn't have to do anything with the crank should I? Would it be best to take the stripped down powerhead, leaving only the block and head on it? I don't have the tools to compress the rings etc.
