Re: 2 questions

am impressed that an 18' boat can be had with a 5.7!

But I think this is one to be wary of. No maintainence to drive, engine, what else? I am wondering what you consider "good condition"? I think replacing a gimbal bearing requires a few special tools.

Re: 2 questions

Gimbles fine one this boat just curious of others. Does anyone have an estimate of cost or if its hard to do? I dont mind geting special tools.

The mechanic went over the 5.7 and said all was good and gave it a tune up and I think a few other small things. The interior on this is very nice. I just dont think they checked the oil on the lower unit for 4 years...

Any other opinions? thanks

Re: 2 questions

Ask your gimbal bearing question on the Mercruiser/Volvo repair section of this forum...it's full of technicians who will shoot you a rough price. Often this repair gets out of hand and goes way beyond just the bearing, it may need a bearing housing and driveshaft if it's been neglected for too long. I'd guestimate it somewhere between $300 and $1,500 depending on how long the bearing has been bad.

If you're not extremely mechanically inclined, don't do it yourself. It definitely takes a few special tools and some know-how. At a minimum you need a shop manual, an engine alignment tool, a bearing puller on a slide-hammer, and the properly sized drift to get the new bearing installed. The techs can get more specific for you on the other thread.
