2 side caps

this is a 1979 200 hp johnson,can anybody tell me what these caps are for and what is under them,because when I run the motor on the hose water leaks out from all around that cap thanx.

Correct its your lower engine mounts, corrosion is often found in this area due to saltwater lodges itself in this area and corrodes through to the exhaust housing.
Chances are your mounts will need replacement, check ebay. You can used JB Weld to seal the holes..

I think you are going to find that there are drain holes behind those mounts. Water that escapes from the water pump comes out of the drain holes. If it didn't drain, the water would fill clear up to the top of the drive shaft tube and get into the engine through the lower crankshaft seal.

In other words, it is normal for water to come out there. It was made that way on purpose.

it would be a good idea to make sure all the little drain holes on the lower unit are clear as well. They often times clog up and if salt water sits in there, then it will eat the cavities out and make a real mess. If water sits in there over the winter, then it will freeze and bust the lower unit.
