Intake Silencer? Opened it up (yes, I was just curious what was inside... maybe a filter that needed changing crossed my mind).... and discovered that the only part inside was the cylindrical part with small holes in it and it sets inside the silencer. Surrounding it is some sort of 'stuff' that looks just like fiberglass insulation and it's dirty and somewhat oily. Doesn't look to me like it should be that way? I was able to find out that the 'stuff' is called "Acoustical Liner" P/N 203582.

Does anybody know what this 'stuff' is made of and what I might use as a replacement material? I'm thinking that it should not be made of fiberglass, but something else?

Thanks again... gee, I keep being amazed by how helpful everyone has been! I just can't say it enough! :D

Hi Suzie....usually when I run across one of these I take it apart and clean it in some light solvent. Don't really know what the stuff is.

BW:

I believe the original material is fiberglass. Basically the job of this media is to absorb sound rather than reflect it, I would think fiberglass probably does a fairly decent job of this. This design is sort'a like a glass pack muffler on the air intake as opposed to the exhaust. If you do indeed change it possibly some sort of foam may be suitable. However, you do need to make sure the replacement material is relatively flame proof. As long as your acoustical liner is relatively intact I would suggest cleaning any accumulated debris or gunk out of it. This should adequately return it close to its original condition.

Hope this helps...

MG
