Does anyone manufacture a device to measure the oil content in the fuel tank for a two stroke?

Re: 2 stroke oil content

When in doubt add more. Even if its double what it's supposed to be, it's better than not enough. During engine breakins, 25:1 is required for the first 10 hours or so...so it can't be that bad once in a while if you have more than the 50:1

Good point. If I erred and added the oil twice for a 50:1 ratio it shouldn't be harmful, as the post break-in ratio is 100:1. Thanks for the comment.

they change that 100:1 back to 50/1, quite a few years ago. they were not getting enough lube.

Yup, they had enough lube to run....just not enough to sit for any length of time without rusting up, I think I've read that here somewhere...I get lost reading all these posts :p ;)

You make a good point regarding the protection of an engine that sits for awhile, especially one hanging off a braket over salt water. Even though the manual for this 1999 Yamaha says to use 100:1, I'm going to start using the 50:1 ratio to increase the protection of the interior of the engine. Thanks for your comments, especially since I don't really want any sizable repair bills or replacement of the engine.

Re: 2 stroke oil content

At what oil ratio will my '99 Yamaha 15hp 2 stroke (mentioned above) have problems starting or idling considering that it has a recommended ratio of 100:1? Will 50:1 or 25:1 cause an increase in sparkplug fouling and should I use a different plug?

Glasply 1, I once saw a device which proported to be able to measure the amount of oil in a premix, using viscosity. It was basically a funnel with a precisely sized hole. The procedure was to fill the funnel, and time how long it took to run out. A time chart provided the mixture ratio.

No. Same plug. Just check it more often if you wish, but 5 gallons goes fast. You'd have to run a whole season to see any difference in plug fouling.

Thanks for all the tips. I'm going to add the cleaner to the engine and spray the carburetor. Hopefully that will do it.
