2 stroke oil requirements 1983 50 hp 4 cylinder

I have an original never overhauled engine. It's still running perfect. Last two seasons I used Yamalube synthetic and premix at 50:1. This year I got a good deal on a gallon of Quicksilver full synthetic. However the Quicksilver doesn't mention that it can be used on outboards. It's for PWC and sport boat engines, but can be premixed too. I don't know if it's too thin for my old Mercury or if it doesn't matter at all because it's premixed anyway.

I was wondering the original oil type requirement if it was TWC something etc.?

Ok, to partially answer my own question I've found that my engine apparently requires TCW3 oil (ashless). The Quicksilver is a JASO FD rated oil which is NOT ashless. However it doesn't smoke and is a very clean burning oil. I don't know if it makes a difference on this little 50 HP or not. Maybe the worst case is dirty plugs over time?

It makes a difference, Joe. Use only oils rated TC-W3, like the Manual says.

Ok, I can find someone who'll buy this stuff from me, I have a lot of friends with boats etc. - or I can use it in the weedeater for the next 5 years.

I did some more research and found a LOT of happy people using Amsoil "Saber outboard" 100:1 oil. They all claim same results- no smoke at all, and no problems. A few of them had been running it for years with no issues. One changed his head gasket and saw that the pistons looked extremely clean. Another said his exhaust had eliminated the oil build up. Everyone claims the plugs are always clean and never foul, and most all agree that you get better throttle response. Apparently it's designed to run at 100:1 on engines that were originally using 50:1 old school oil.

Although it's designed to be run at 100:1, you can still run 50:1. However running it at 50:1 just blows the whole purpose of it's design, which is to run less oil and clean the exhaust byproducts.

I've had great results with all of Amsoil's products (at least the few that I've tried). The only problem I have with Amsoil is that I can't drive to the local parts store and buy it. I have to call 10 different local people who are "distributors" selling it out of their garage. The other option is ordering, paying shipping, and then waiting.

So on this topic, is anyone reading this thread that has tried the Amsoil "Saber" 2 stroke TCW3 oil?

Amsoil is mentioned in about 100 threads in the archives. Some swear by it, others remind that it is not TC-W3 certified and swear at it.

We already have too many oil threads. Let's let this one die.
