I've been looking at buying a larger boat. Requirements are outboard powered, cuddy cabin, deep V aluminum hull, and preferably 22ft to 24ft. Models I'm considering are Starcraft?s Islander and Crestliner Sabre. I looked at Sylvan Offshore models, but dont' like many things I've seen. I realize aluminum hulls a light and not necessarily favored by many. Anyway, the questions I have that I hope someone can answer have to do with lubrication of 2 stoke motors, mainly Mercury's Opti-Max, Evinrude?s E-Tec and Johnson/Evinrude VRO. I've been told that if I buy an older outboard that has the VRO system, that I should purchase a VRO elimination kit and just mix my fuel at 50:1. I was told that there is a "O" ring in the VRO pump which keeps the fuel and oil separated, and as the O ring wears, it allow fuel to pass through into the oil and dilutes it. The Pump doesn't recognize the dilution and as a consequence, the engine is starved for lubrication. If this is wrong in any way please elaborate. As for E-Tec and Opti-Max oil systems are they similar to the VRO system? If so, what improvements were made to prevent oil pump failure such as I described above?

Re: 2 stroke oil systems

ETEC and Optimax are Direct Fuel Injected (DFI) engines. Fuel and lubrication are managed in completely separate ways that have no resemblance to VRO or other ways of including oil in the fuel as it goes into the engine.

In DFI, the fuel, undiluted, is injected directly into the cylinder. Oil is injected into the crankcase. Parts can fail, but the DFI systems are not related in any way to carbed or EFI systems, so any comparison would be apples and oranges.

Thanks for the info. Haven't had any outboard newer than my 1979 70hp Evinrude on my 1963 Starcraft Holiday.

Johnson perfected the oil injection used on it's engines in the mid-90s, IMHO. Not only is the injection pump a good design, they have multiple warning systems to detect failure. The 60* V6 motors from that era and newer are superb, but consume lots of fuel, compared to a direct injection motor. The story of the deteriorating o-ring is a urban legend.

I cannot speak for Mercury oil injection on carb motors, due to a lack of experience.

You should consider Optimax and E-TEC. Stay away from FICHT motors.

What about the oil injection system that Yamaha uses. I'm also going to look at a Crestliner Sabre with two 1990 90 hp Yamaha outboard motors. Is there anything I should be looking at specifically? If the broker still has the boat in possession in a week and a half, I'll be taking a trip to check it out along with a few other boats I've located.

sec56, please start your own thread in the Yamaha Forum. What you have done here is called hijacking and is not appreciated.

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack my forum. My topic was 2 stroke oil systems, not specifically Johnson/Evinrude VRO systems. I just began with Johnson/Evinrude

I over reacted. Sorry about that. Would you like this moved to Outboard Non-Repair, which is more general?

No, I went to the Yamaha forum, but will remember the Outboard non-repair as you suggested if i want more general information regarding multiple manufacturers.
