2-stroke synthetic oils in Canada?

Can anybody recommend a good 2-stroke synthetic oil available in Canada? I looked at Walmart and Canadian Tire and my local marine dealers, and all I can find is Amsoil for $14/quart, and larger jugs of Mercury synthetic, which are also very expensive. I don't put a whole lot of hours on my motor, so I don't mind paying a bit more for a quality oil. I can't find the Pennzoil Synthetic that you US guys are raving about.

I'm looking to switch from the blue Quicksilver stuff to something that smokes/smells less in my Mercury classic 90 w/ automatic oiler. I've never run a large 2-stroke like this before and I'd be happier with it if it could run a bit cleaner.

thanks

By your own words-"I don't use much".

Pay the man and get on with it. Your choice. If you go synthetic, it's going to be expensive. What is a 50% increase in cost worth over 3 months?

Go syn and get what you want, less smoke and smell.

I just bought a gallon of Pennzoil 100% Sythetic at Walmart here in South Carolina, but they keep it over in the Automotive Oils/Lubricants section of the store, Not with the boat/marine/fishing stuff. Did you ask or look over in the automotive oils section?...I can't imagine if Walmart didn't carry the sythetic oils in Canada for some reason?

DJ - I'll do it if I have to but I'd like to find a source for the larger containers of something a bit more economical. I suspect that buying it by the quart is much more costly than in larger sizes.

Robert Graham - the Canadian version of walmart has only a very limited oil selection, and it sounds as if we have very little variety compared to what you have. Canadian Tire is probably going to be the most economical option but I am still searching. I'd like to find a source for the Pennzoil but haven't seen it available anywhere here, except for 4-stroke.

try G-OIL, canuck tire sells it ,not cheap but if you want the green feeling its the way to go.full synth, ive used it for 2 months now and like it .no smell ,motor runs very good ,hasnt blown up in my face yet so its fine by me,lol.makes me laugh that up here in the frozen north if a oil well so much as hicupps up goes the price of gas and all oils!now tell me what the heck has synth oil got to do with dino oil atall.g-oil is made from a formula of cowfat and tallow plus additives ,wonder if you run out of cooking oil at camp how it would do??lol.seriously, try the oil, its rated tc-w3.has a ultimate biodegradable rating .classified as safe, not hazardous to humans or the enviroment .

Re: 2-stroke synthetic oils in Canada?

thanks cougar, I might give it a try. The 90 is the first big 2-stroke I've ever owned. I put synthetic in my Honda 5 and it made some amazing differences in terms of idle quality, carbon on plugs, and longevity. I'm thinking of making the switch on this big motor, if only to reduce the smell and smoke.

Around here I have seen Mercury's synthetic, Amsoil 2-stroke injector, and the G-oil stuff for sale. The G-oil doesn't seem to have the same track record as the others, but it does have the NMMA TCW-3 rating, if that means anything.

if you're looking for somebody to beat WalMart and Canadian Tire by any significant amount you're going to be disappointed.

Ask crappy tire if it ever goes on sale. depends on the supplier whether or not they ever have a sale on it

not sure what Costco might have out west.
pretty sure no synth at the ones in ON

Sierra or Mallory branded oils here! There's 2 big marine shops in town and neither sell very much for oil, Merc and Yamaha dealers, I'd say half of all boats in the area are running Sierra oils, and a gallon of Merc oil is usually almost $20 more than my Sierra.

Canadian tire in Ontario has just started selling natilius synthetic 2 stroke but I've only seen it in quarts .I think it was around the $10 range you could ask there if they can order it for you. Also if you have a true value may sell esso synthetic

Just stay away from Shell oil. But if you go to any dealer who deals with Payne's Marine, Western Marine, or Outboard Rebore, they can get you Sierra oil(Which is still my recommendation)

In the snowmobile world, this is the only oil that has caused failures at the shop I worked for, and the only oil the OEM's single out as poor quality and non-warrantable. BRP has warrantied many motors using 'other' oils except for Shell. Just good practice to stay away from oils the OEM's will refuse to warranty bar-none.

Been using it for 6 years now ... either bought from Canadian Tire or directly from the company internet site

Motors run smoother, quieter, bit more power, no water mess, less smoke, no smell ... nevertheless I think most synthetic 2 cycle oil will give the same results.

Cheers

Re: 2-stroke synthetic oils in Canada?

I used the G-Oil all last year in my 90 2-stroke. It still smokes, but definitely smokes less. The price is about the same as non-synthetic, and it is 100% biodegradable. Sure, the other products of combustion still wind up in our waterways, but it seems to me a better option than dino oil. My friends have commented on the sweet smell of burning cow fat... Definitely not as objectionable as the previous Mercury oil I was using....

Is this G-Oil synthetic or Biodegradable ? or both ? Tx

follow ...

Just did my own research and it would seem that the G-oil is NOT a synthetic oil as we know it (penzoil-Amsoil-Redline) it's a biodegradable oil made with a different base than dino oils. Some suspect it does not lubricate as well. I would not know about that but will not try it to find out.
