Hey iboats community so first off thank you for the help you didn’t know you have given me so far in my 1985 Renken bigger project than I thought it would be boat...I am new here but been reading and working on this thing for almost a year now....to my question...I should of used a copper hammer but I’m an impatient moron and I beat the main mounting studs on my transom assembly for my alpha one gen 2 stern drive to holy hell trying to get it off the transom. I’ve mushroomed up the 2 Main studs real bad where I can’t get a die on there to chase the threads. Can’t get the nut on there. Should I try to grind the studs down some to where the threads are good it’s only the top of the bolts that are bad or if I still can’t get the nut on could I cut it and easy out these from the gimbal housing? My buddy was trying to tell me these bolts are welded in but I was hoping he’s wrong..there’s a good amount of corrosion so I can’t tell. A new gimbal is out of the question for the moment...I’m already in the poorhouse that’s why I bought a stinkin renken in the 1st place. (I actually really like the boat) took a lot of work to get it running, found it to have a leak, big corrosion hole in the gimbal housing, patched that up with some fiberglass, and wanted to slap it all back together to put off a complete restoration until a later date...I’m slow moving on it cause I’m broke and learning as I go. But I don’t care if I hit the freakin lottery I’m restoring this old boat if it’s the last thing I do. -Erik in FTL

Hello StickinRenken, and :welcome: to iboats

They are steel studs into an aluminium housing, so no, they are not welded. You should be able to unscrew them.

1985 boat with a Gen II gimbal? Has it had a re-power? (post serial number of gimbal housing)

Your right not a gen 2 r/mr luckily I haven’t needed to do much work on the drive just changed the water pump, and replaced the trim anchor after beating it with a hammer...didn’t learn my lesson on that one

By that serial number, MR... Which is exactly the same as an Alpha One anyway. Just a bit of marketing 'rubbish'...

Yeah, beating it with a hammer. I've only ever found one thing that responds to being hit with a hammer. And she got mighty mad.
