1988 200 Oil injected (long since removed) carb motor

There are a number of small oil lines going all over this motor; from the cylinders to the Crank Case and so forth. There is one in particular that is right beside the shifter arm. This particular hose barb has been broken off, presumably by the shifter arm (terrible design). Are these little lines necessary? What do they do? Can I just block this thing off and be OK. Please help folks! I assume they are either really important, or not important at all, but I need to know. And yes I did buy a manual, and can't find anything about them other than the routing. Please help!

Re: 200 black max small oil hose

The small 'recirc' lines are there to pull accumulated UN-burnt oil from the cylinders, recirculate it into the airstream of another cylinder where it will again provide some lubrication and eventually burn-off and exit the motor.

Removing them is not a good idea. Within a reasonably short time each cyl will begin to accumulate oil at the lower bearing, cause additional drag on the bearings then eventually 'splash' a whole drop (or more) into a cyl and on the plug interfering with the firing of the cyl and causing intermittent power losses.

The flow path of the hoses is specific, one fitting of each pair has a check valve inside. Be sure to get the correct fitting to replace your broken one.

Make sure all hoses are good, no cracks from age, if any doubt, replace them.

thanks, after looking at them for a while, that is pretty much what i figured they did.

If one of those lines came undone, would it cause that cylinder to run lean?

It would cause a very small air leak into the suction cyl of the pair, the one without the check valve fitting.

I don't know if that would be lean enough to cause damage at WOT, unless the fuel system was slightly lean to begin with, THEN it could be a serious problem.
