Working on a 1976 200 Evinrude i got for $250 it has good compression #1 95, #2 100, #3 90, #4 95, #5 #90, #6 95....i'll probably do a decarb or pull the head and clean the carbon and get a look inside..the past couple of motors i have built the rod bolts have been stretched pretty bad, granted i did install new ones, i am wondering how long these will last if they are infact stock ??

I have the 2 stock fuel pumps comming for it as well as a factory manual , the previous owner removed and lost them, and put a little electric pump on that floods pretty easy...went through the carbs today and i have to say they are the cleanest i've seen in a while pretty much spotless...only one had a problem one of the screws on the blades in the throat of the carb is missing, it only has 1 screw instead of two..i wonder if the local hardware store would carry anything that small...

When the fuel pumps get here i'm going to try to crank it, i have done a spark test and all have good strong spark but number one, it has no spark, i guess i can take one from another cylinder and swap it out and see if its the coil... thanks for any input :)

That pretty low compression for a 76 model, should be in the 120psi range. If throttle/choke shaft screw is missing it might be stuck on top of piston.

Re: 200 evinrude

I agree on the compression issue. While they are to be within ten percent of each other, they are low for a 76-200. Someone must have changed the heads to bathtub heads for compression that low. What are the part numbers on the heads on the engine? Any chance it is a replacement block? In addition to swapping the #1 coil, you can swap the power packs to see if that changes the side of the dead spark plug. If neither swap alters the dead plug wire on #1, you will need to look at the stator and timer base.

Re: 200 evinrude

Hey i swapped the packs and now i believe #6 doesnt fire...but number 2 seems to be firing twice each time ?? the timing light flashes twice as fast and twice as much on #2...1, 3, and 5 have good spark now but the problem followed the pack... i believe this means the pack is bad right ?? also when i get the problem fixed do i need to swap the packs back or can i leave them ?? i have a DVA on order to help with future problems but all i have for now is a multi meter any help is greatly appreciated

The packs don't care which side they are on, just replace the bad one.
