I have been fighting now for 5 weeks to get my 82 200hp cool, not worrying about anything else. Now that the engine runs cool, I can tackle some of the other issues. When I am at home running on the tank, the engine idles smooth and about 750 RPM. When I go to the lake, the same, as soon as I drop it in gear it want's to stall, fires right back up, I can hold the throttle a little and idles fine. Could this be a simple idle adjustment or should I look somewhere else?

Drummer,

I've got an 81 225 that I had issues with also and seams to be better now after many hours of troubleshooting.
Yes it could be a simple adjustment of the idle stop screw.
I would check idle in gear. 750rpm in nuteral may be a little low. On the water I idle at about750-850rpm IN GEAR.
Not sure of your motor but all of em had either an idle stablizer and/or high speed timing advance control module thats mounted on top of the carb box in front of the flywheel. I removed mine and set WOT timing at 24 degrees.
Your carbs do not have idle screw adjustment, but rather idle vent jets.
Have you checked compression?
There are a lot of factors to rule out but start with the simple stuff first.

From past experience and what I've been told these motors don't like to idle but sure do like to go!

Just my .02

Good Luck!

Compression was as low as 124 and high as 130, I just changed all plugs and verified that I have have spark on all cylinders. I would do the link and sync listed in the manual but I do not have a dial indicator. It looks to me that it costs more to buy that tool than it would take for me to pay a mechanic to perform the task
