200 hp which block is it?

bought a 200 hp merc serial#5945039 motor is believed to be a 1982 2.3 is this correct? motor seems to be solid compression wise. the wires need to be replaced going to coils proably going to replace whole ignition system stator,trigger and power packs; fish offshore .I like the piece of mind. Is this a good motor I've never run large mercs only omc's. I've got a 50hp on my whaler never had a problem other than crumbling wires. I've heard great things about the 2.5s wish this a 2.5 my buddy fishes twin 2.5s EFI motors on his mako swears by them. never a minutes trouble.

thanks for the web site it's a 2.0 is this a good engine ? I don't know much about them . I was told to stay away from the 2.4 . not sure why I've been told that most power heads will bolt up to mid section 2.5,2.4,and 2.3 I wonder how well the 2.0 will hold up . I won't be running it hard but will run it for hours on end.

I thought that was a 2.4 liter. I agree the 2.5 EFI are great. I have carbs and EFI's in the 2.5 offshore, and they seem to be good workhorses. I never had a 2.4 but I see them still going.......

UPON CLOSER INSPECTION AND DIGGING THROUGH THE CLYMER MANUAL. THE POWER HEAD AND THE MIDSECTION ARE FROM DIFF YEARS THE MOTOR HAS OIL INJECTION AND HAS AN ELECTRONIC IDLE REGULATOR #S ON THE BLOCK 858-7788 ALSO HAS THE ENRICHENER CIRUIT I'M NEW TO THE LARGE MERCS.DOES THIS SOUND FAMILAR TO ANYONE THIS IS DEFINATELY A MIX MATCH MOTOR I'M NOT EVEN SURE OF HP? THE MOTOR CAME WITH A LASERII PROP 25P HAS THE SINGLE RAM TRIM .

It would have to be big to push that 25p. Most likely a 200hp motor off a bassboat..... Find the welch plug and post the serial number off it.....

I looked on the top of the motor for the little silver button. Is that the welch plug? This motor has a black one with the #8 on it no serial#s is there another one any where?
