Just bought a used boat with a 1999 200CXL BW Merc and lost the stator after a few times out. The last owner had the stator replaced about 1 year ago. He had the boat in storage for the bulk of the year and couldn't have had more than 15 or 20 hours on the motor. I told the repair shop this, but he didn't find anything else wrong. Warranty will cover for one more year, but I don't want this to be a recurring thing.

What causes a stator to go bad other than defects or normal wear & tear?

Stator went out?? Did it fail on the ignition side or the charging output. Is this a high/low red/blue stator assy?

Re: 200 Merc Stator

Thanks for the replies.

Took the batteries out, topped off the water & charged them after I got it home and the connections were clean.

Will ask the guys in the shop Monday to be sure, but I blv it's a high\low. Last failure was the high speed part of the stator. Not sure what was out this time. I see it was replaced with Mercury part #398- 9610A19 the last time for what it's worth.

Re: 200 Merc Stator

I talked to the shop this morning & was told it's a red\blue stator and the failure is on the ignition side. Enough spark to idle ok, but not enough to handle a load.
